It's Comic Con Time Again
The halls and offices of Fox Television Animation were pretty empty today, as many of the talented peeps around here have migrated south for the annual San Diego Comic Con.
FTA has a pretty big presence at the show this year. A panel with the creators of Family Guy and American Dad will be on hand to show some sneak peaks at the upcoming seasons of both shows, and will answer questions from fans. If you're heading down to the big con this weekend, be sure to checkidy-check it out and say hello to the Family Guy folks.
The crew from "Hot Mexican Love" comics will be on hand at the convention too, so keep an eye peeled. (What's with that phrase anyway? Wouldn't a peeled eye actually hinder your ability to notice a specific detail, not enhance it?)
This year it's not just about the traditional comic book universe. Hollywood has taken notice of the comic world in a big way, and will have its own massive presence. Samuel L. Jackson, Hillary Swank and others will be on hand. "San Diego Comic Con- it's not just for geeks anymore". There goes the neighborhood. Next thing you know, members of the fair sex will actually be on hand in numbers higher than can be counted on one's hand.
I won't be heading down, even though I always love a good excuse to go to beautiful San Diego. I actually haven't been to the comic con since 1993 when Mike and I went with Gracie Films to promote the Bongo Comics Simpsons comic books. At the time we were involved with writing and drawing the Itchy and Scratchy comic book series.
To anyone who is heading down to the comic con: say, can you get me Samuel L. Jackson's autograph on my copy of Unbreakable? Thanks in advance.

I don't know, as long there are still overweight 40 year olds parading around in tight Batman and Robin costumes, the fairer sex might not be showing up in large numbers for a while. And what I found interesting is you can see the same costumed females plastered across different media outlets, presumably because there's still only a handful of them so there are less to choose from than the 100 guys dressed as Stormtroopers. Say what you will, but this con doesn't do a lot to change the image most americans have of comic buyers being like the comic book guy from the Simpsons.
Although I did notice NPR had coverage of the con today. And they also spelled out the increased Hollywood presence as they're looking for stories with defined characters that would translate well to the screen since comic book movies seem to be all the rage at the moment (wait until some of the self produced Marvel films show up, then I suspect that trend will end).
I'm still waiting for the Iron Man movie!
I would have thought the Incredible Suck, err, I mean Hulk movie, coupled with "The Punisher" and topped off with "Elektra" would have been enough to bring an end to the comic book movie trend.
Batman Begins was good, though.
I actually did go to the Con this year with my brother, on a last minute whim and we Forrest gump'ed our way in via some friends we met at my Agent's party who gave us some free exhibitor passes. I also have not been there since Harry and I went... and let me tell it is NOTHING like it was then. At least 5 times the size and comics are really almost a second fiddle to animation, games and movies now.
There is so much in the way of DVDs, sketchbooks, art and books that it is really impossible to see everything in one day. It took my brother and I all day to do half of the Con and another full day to do the rest.
I heard that there were 110,000 who registered and 250,000 who showed up! I can attest to that fact as the place was literally crawling with people and if you didn't have passes it was a four-hour wait to get in in the 100+ sun.
I will say that there were actuall quite a lot of scantily-clad hotties there this year and I guess that's because comics have gone main-stream.
A big BIG show!
Harry, you should really go down there to sell Ribeye next year. It would be worth it I believe.

Okay fess up, Mike!
How much did it set you back?
I know you and Andy had to buy at least a small stack of DVDs and books!
(I'm sure I would have had to lock up my wallet somewhere before I went).
I was toying with the idea of going, but ultimately it was just so hot this weekend we didn't feel like going anywhere too far from a swamp cooler or air conditioner.
And I'd have been the schmuck standing in that long line in 100 degree heat.
Ahh well, maybe next year. And with Ribeye...? I dunno- somehow I still get a bad vibe remembering the invite to "The Furry Party" when you and I went in '90 or so. Brrrr...
