Ribeye Desert Desktop

Here's a new Zaptoons desktop picture. This image graces our front page this week. You can use it to spice up that same old boring computer desktop you've been using for ages. If you're like a lot of us, you rarely change the desktop background pictures. Well fear not, click the link below and download the desktop wallpaper. It's sized at 1024 x 768 pixels to fit most computer monitor resolutions.

A new Ribeye the Bullbarian Desktop wallpaper. This is a scene from our upcoming Ribeye book, 'The Sands of Fate'. To download the desktop, click here. Wait for the image to load- then right-click it (control-click for Mac) and choose 'Save Picture As' or 'Download Image'.

Laguna Nigel has electricity!

Friday night, all was going well until a huge thunderstorm crept up on us. I thought it wasn't supposed to rain in Los Angeles, but boy has that notion been disproving itself lately! Rain has been coming down in sheets. Unfortunately, some lightning came down with it, and took out the power in a grid of about 1,000 houses, of which ours was one.

No power all night. This was no real problem, after all at night it's lights out and sleep anyway. But as the outage dragged on into Saturday, it started to get a little annoying. Luckily my mom has kept us supplied with an assortment of wind-up emergency items, such as a radio. (Battery operated gear would do me little good, as I'd never remember to change the batteries!) At one point during the day, I asked my wife if she'd cut my hair, and she said "Sure!" Then we realized that "We need power for the clippers." Oops.

Virtually every time I went into our candle-lit cave of a bathroom, I'd switch up the light switch, waiting for some decent light to shave or shower by. Oops.

But hey, having no power is no problem, I'll just write some more of my new book on my laptop. Except it wasn't charged. Oops. My wife was more fortunate- sort of. Her laptop was charged and ready to go, so she was all set to fire up and write her online journal. One problem. She had a perfectly functional laptop, but no power means no DSL modem, no wireless router, no Internet. Oops. We could have used a simple modem line since the phone powers itself, but in our high-speed, broadband, wireless home we've shunned the lowly 56k and never bothered with access numbers. Oops.

So we called the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. First the word was it would take about 2 hours to restore the power. 2 hours passed in blissful darkness. We called again and the answer was 6 hours. Later we called again, and the answer was about 12 hours. So we stopped calling, before they pushed it ahead the whole weekend. My wife took the content of our no longer frozen freezer, and drove it to civilization, IE: a friend's house with a working freezer.

We had a party to go to at a friend's house in Laguna Nigel, so we drove down. Before arriving, we checked into a hotel in nearby Costa Mesa, so that after attending the party, we wouldn't have to drive back home late at night in the rain, and so we'd have the added benefit of... *gasp*, electricity! What a wonderful thing, and to think, how much we've taken it for granted.

As I write this, it's 9am Sunday morning, (3 day weekend by the way!) and we're both cooped up in our hotel room enjoying the benefits of electricity before heading out. I've gotten to finish writing a few chapters of my book. I had to take the opportunity to post to my Zaptoons blog- who knows if we'll have power or not when we get home. Come to think of it, why go home to uncertain electronic conditions? Think we'll stay here a while!

I'm baaaack!

Howdy folks!
I finally arrived safely back into the arms of Uncle Sam. It was a full month to the day that I was over there and it was a very, very different experience for me. I loved it and now I really feel the need to travel more. I missed my family something fierce but the Isle of Man was a true eye-opener than I will never forget. So many people and so many different ideas about how life is supposed to work. Ask ten people the same question and you'll get ten answers, ask ten Americans and ten Europeans the same thing and the results are even more different. Growing up in America can stagnate your mind. We are sitters (as evidenced by our obesity epidemic) and we don't travel as much as Europeans do at least that's the gist I get from speaking with them. Harry's wife, Leila has been all over the place and I am sure it is many more places than the average American.

The place that I traveled, The Isle of Man is known as being a largely Norse community and it really helped me to understand vikings and barbarians better. Not that the people are barbaric there today, not by any means in fact quite the opposite, but the land is steeped in rich history dating back to the Roman times. Vikings invaded and settles on that island since the the early 800s and although it's not documented there's no reason why it wouldn't have even been earlier than that. Even Caesar himself knew about the Isle of Man! All in all this trip will surely help us in the next book Harry and I do. Without a doubt. Stay tuned for more books from Zaptoons... oh yeah and continue to read my blog Manx Milowerx. There are still 12 Americans over there and they will continue on with the blogging tradition that I started over a month ago... so keep reading!

Viva Las Vegas!

In Las Vegas Nevada this weekend for the big premiere screening of the show I work on called American Dad. It'll premiere Sunday on Fox right after the Superbowl, and a new episode of The Simpsons- a much coveted timeslot, believe me. If you get a chance, check the show out. American Dad is from the same creative team that brought the very popular Family Guy series to life. If you miss American Dad on Sunday, be sure to catch it in it's regular timeslot starting May 1st, along with a brand new season of Family Guy. Fox Animation is on a roll lately, and I'm glad to be along for the ride.

My wife and I flew into Vegas on Friday evening from Los Angeles, and we're staying at the Sahara, where I'm writing this blog entry. Today, (Saturday) we hit the town and checked out the sites- and had a lot of good food- great food in mass quantity being something that's easy to find in Las Vegas. We hung out with some very good friends of ours that drove out.

We're not really gamblers- the occasional nickel slot and that's it for me, but I always enjoy Vegas for the crazy atmosphere here. Looking out over the strip from our hotel room 21 stories up, I've been inspired to do a bit of writing on my next book.

Tomorrow, Sunday- we'll join the crew from Fox Animation Studios over at the Rio hotel for the big bash where we'll celebrate the premiere of our show, and watch it as it airs. Then it's back to Los Angeles on Monday morning for us- flying back into town in time to be at work Monday morning.

That's it from this city of lights! I'm keeping my money in my wallet and out of the casinos! So far, so good!
